Welcome to the October 2025 News Letter

We look forward to continuing our planned programme of speakers at the October meeting, when there will be a talk given by a speaker from Basildon Park.

Basildon Park is a hidden Gem of British Heritage

  • 18th-Century Origins: Basildon Park was built for Sir Francis Sykes, a wealthy nabob who made his fortune in India. The house is a textbook example of Palladian architecture.

  • Hollywood Fame: It served as a filming location for Pride and Prejudice (2005) and Downton Abbey, making it a cinematic favorite for period dramas.

  • Post-War Revival: After falling into disrepair post-WWII, it was rescued in the 1950s by Lord and Lady Iliffe, who restored it and filled it with 18th-century furnishings.

  • It is now managed by The National Trust

Our meetings are usually on the third Thursday of the month in the Rose Room at the Swallowfield Parish Hall. Visitors are always welcome
