SWALLOWFIELD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Our next meeting is on

THURSDAY  MAY 2024

"Graffiti found in Berkshire Churches". The Speaker will be James Peddle        .

James Peddle will introduce us to the fascinating story of graffiti that have been left by people in the past. These are an insight onto what people who left the graffiti felt or commented on what was happening in their lives. James is part of a survey being carried out by the. Berkshire Medieval Graffiti Survey, to look at the graffiti, It will  create opportunities for the church communities and local residents to learn more about graffiti in general and specifically the graffiti present in their church.  The churches will benefit from the knowledge of the location and type of the recorded graffiti and possible a new area of interest in their church.  Both the local communities and the churches new knowledge and interest should go towards building a lasting appreciation of the existence, and hopefully preservation of the graffiti. It is expected that the graffiti discovered will also contribute to and extend the interest in the local history of the villages, through the possible discovery of names, dates, initials and pictures (amongst other things)

WE MEET IN THE ROSE ROOM AT THE PARISH HALL 7.30 pm for 8 pm

Everyone will be most welcome.
