SWALLOWFIELD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
February 2025 Meeting
Swallowfield Local History Newsletter
20th February 2025
This months Speaker will be Mike Cooper.
We have had Mike speak on several occasions. His talks are always Interesting - one thing we can be sure is he will have spent many an hour creating this presentation.
Subject of talk this month talk is
Hospitum to Workhouse via the Oracle: Social Care and Welfare in Reading from the Middle Ages to 1900.
Although modern concepts of “welfare” might have been alien, from the Abbey to the creation of Battle Hospital Reading did provide for housing, “relief” and health care for its people. This is a survey of what was done, including the work of the Abbey, alms houses and the Corporation.
The meetings are usually held in the Rose Room in the Swallowfield Parish Hall at 07.30pm for 08.00pm. Unless there is a change in venue, then we will advise of it nearer the time as to where this will be.
